FWIW, Ford warns against using electric pumps that suck- they say the sucking
action lowers the boiling point of the fuel, making vapor lock easier. But
pulling from the stock tank-out line to the mechanical pump doesn't do this
because of the low mounting. Since the mechanical pump-in fitting is below the
tank, a siphon is set up once the pump is primed, so the pump doesn't have to
lift the gas- the siphon does that.
A second thought is insulating the pump-to-carb line. I used a stock
insulating sleeve from a junkyard, made for an '87 Pontiac Fiero fuel line and its
exactly the right length to go from the Pantera's mechanical pump, up next to the
distributor. Cost was $1.00. There are commercial sleeves available, too.
Third, if the intake is getting too hot, the fuel in the carb may boil. An
insulating spacer between the carb & intake will help. PPC-Reno makes these in
phenolic for Summit speed shops and there are other sources, too. Even wood
spacers work and is easy to make in a home garage. No particular thickness is
needed, unless you're also looking for more power or trying to fit under a
particular engine screen. Good luck- J DeRyke
