Do you have a fully baffled oil pan? If not, this is what often happens. The 
pistons- especially those on the rod with no insert-   likely will have also 
hit the head. This usually collapses the top ring land, trapping the ring or 
breaking it, and blow-by radically increases. Sounds like you caught this one 
just in time- the next step was a rod exposed to daylight and you needing a new 
block. The cam is wasted BTW- that much wear on the lifters rounds off the
