Yes. But stuff happens.... First, check the whole system for leaks and the
master reservoir for fluid level. if they're OK, with the engine off, check the
disengagement at the flywheel by having someone mat the clutch pedal while you
stick a feeler gauge in the bellhousing access hole. There should be about
0.040" clearance betweeen disc and flywheel, but I expect much less. If the
master or slave cylinder suddenly leaks or bypasses internally, the disengagement
distance will become much less even though you can 'feel' resistence thru the
pedal or the throwout bellcrank. And this always causes grinding when
shifting.
The fix is usually to replace the part since rebuilds are often unsuccessful.
Its a good idea to replace both master and slave cylinders since they
corroded or wore out as a pair. I recommend a long-throw stainless steel slave, and
an hard-anodized alunimum master for maximum corrosion resistence so this
doesn't happen again. Good luck- J DEryke
