[DeTomaso] Offset versus Backspace (was Re: What is thewidest wheel I can run . . .)

Not so Asa!

I just had a custom set of wheels made, and I was confused also.

The width of the wheel is measured from the "inside" edge of the wheel lip
(where the rubber meets the wheel).

The backspace is measured from the "outside" edge of the wheel lip.

It is possible to have a 9" wheel (9" between the inner lips where the tire
touches), but have a 5" backspace with 0 offset, if the lips add another .5"
width to the wheel on both the inside and the outside.

I am going to right an article about the wheels I had made and the great
company that I worked with that makes custom widths and offsets for some
classic wheels.

Stay tuned!

So let me clarify my question a bit.

How can a 9 inch wide rim, have an offset of 0.000 mm -and- a

backspace of 5.00 Inches?

If it's 9 inches wide, and the offset is 0, that means the hub

mounting surface is inline with the centerline of the wheel. If that

same surface is then used to measure the backspace, shouldn't it be

4.5" since that is half of 9?

Can you see why I'm confused?
