[DeTomaso] Offset versus Backspace (was Re: What is thewidest wheel I can run . . .)

For something so simple, it is confusing. I have to reread the
definition every time I need to do the offset/backspace measurements and
calculation.

wheel I can run . . .)

So let me clarify my question a bit.

How can a 9 inch wide rim, have an offset of 0.000 mm -and- a
backspace of 5.00 Inches?

If it's 9 inches wide, and the offset is 0, that means the hub
mounting surface is inline with the centerline of the wheel. If that
same surface is then used to measure the backspace, shouldn't it be
4.5" since that is half of 9?

Can you see why I'm confused?
