[DeTomaso] Offset versus Backspace (was Re: What is the widest wheel I can run . . .)

So let me clarify my question a bit.

How can a 9 inch wide rim, have an offset of 0.000 mm -and- a  
backspace of 5.00 Inches?

If it's 9 inches wide, and the offset is 0, that means the hub  
mounting surface is inline with the centerline of the wheel.  If that  
same surface is then used to measure the backspace, shouldn't it be  
4.5" since that is half of 9?


Can you see why I'm confused?
