The pins can stick out of the gear a little, on each end or be slightly 
inside- doesn't matter 'cause there's quite a bit of clearance inside the block. 
What's critical is having a real roll pin with a slot down the side, and a 
SECOND reinforcing pin pushed inside the first one. And be very sure that what you 
found is NOT a spring pin made of a coil of thin sheet. A spring pin was 
likely what failed in your car. Also, I hope that was a typo or I read it wrong- NO 
roll pin should be made of aluminum! Such a pin would shear on first startup! 
FWIW, pin-shearing mostly comes from small bits of debris going thru the 
close clearances in a Ford gearotor oil pump. Often, the debris is from a 
disintegrating stock valve stem seal. FWIW- J Deryke
