Steve Wilkinson also sells the needle bearing style pilot, which is what I
put in last year.

I went with Dennis Quella's recommendation. Bearing.

I second the recommendation.

If you talk to Marlin Jack, talk him into making 10 or 20 bushings. They go
like hotcakes on the list.

I suggest you contact Marlin Jack. (I'm looking for contact info now.)

I have his e-mail address, but for some reason it is not stored under his
name - Damn, can someone provide Marlin's e-mail?

Often the ones (bushings) you find at auto parts stores are sourced from
China, and they may contain some ferrous material (ever so slightly magnetic
- check with a magnet). You do NOT want these!

Marlin obtained the correct "Olite" material (brass impregnated with oil)
and cut them to tight tolerances himself. (He is a machinist I believe).

I'm writing an extensive article (which got paused...) on the ZF etc... and
I asked Marlin for some photos, which I immediately received, and I
confirmed he has bushings in stock (as of about 6 weeks ago).

The bushing is preferred to a bearing (IMHO). One reason: the bushing will
initially wear in, matching the exact angle of the ZF snout. It also does
not need lube, while the bearing could run dry over time. Many people use
either type and probably either will work fine. Again I prefer a bushing
(stock design) to a bearing.

Guys:

I'm getting very close to the final assembly (at very long last) of my late
'73 L model's -2 ZF, and have found that I don't have a pilot bearing. I
have the throw out bearing, and it's in excellent condition. But the bearing
that fits in the rear of the crankshaft, that the nose of the input shaft
fits into, that I don't have.

I looked thru SOBills database, and came up with 4 or 5 different numbers
associated with the phrase "pilot bearing". I took them to my nearby NAPA
store, and found that of the 5 numbers, only one "worked" (and it's "on
order"). The NAPA numbers in the database are no longer valid (the NAPA
database managers changed their part numbering system over the past year or
so).

So my question for the list is: Since I've exhausted the database's
information, does anyone have a recently purchased pilot bearing part
number, information, recommendation, thoughts, etc.?

Chris
