[DeTomaso] tie rod ends

I have just gotten around to finally putting the front suspension together after being dissassembled for 3 years.  I have new tie rod ends.  On all other old cars I have worked on, the tie rod end fits in so that the stud is facing up, with the nut on top.  No matter how I do it, the only way the pantera seems to go is with the stud pointing down to the ground.  the shop manual does not really show this connection.  is this the right way, or do I need to take out the welder and adjust things?
