Checking tires for age, wear and inflation is a good thing but the number one reason for tire failure is under inflation followed by debris (nails, bolts, etc) that either cut the tire or imbed in the tire and aren't noticed as a problem until the driver is at 100+ mph hour speeds for more then a few minutes. Tire heats up and the rest is history.

At Silver State, Texas Big Bend, Nevada Open and other open road races the event sponsors have tried to take pro-active roll in tire inspections. All tires all get a careful check during tech inspection. A few years ago they also added a starting line inspection.  There each car and  driver does a "slow-roll" at grid so tech inspection on both sides of the car can check for any debris (nails or bolts, etc) in the tires. 

Guys still show up with new cars or even old cars with new tires that have picked up a piece of debris on the road, have a bad valve stem or just are not checking their own tires for proper inflation or LOSS of air pressure in one tire is usually a good indicator that something is wrong.

Tire failures are about one third of what they used to be in open road races. The tire design and materials used on good high performance tires are allot better then they used to be. 

Even if you do NOT race  you can still hit small debris and never know its a problem. You can still forget to check inflation You also need to not only check the tire age and conditon but also check the INSIDE of yours for any body,chassis wear or rubbing. 

Remember no matter what you're driving everyone is going down the road on 4-pieces of rubber....make sure you check yours often.
