The selection valve provides cowl (outside) or cabin air as the  input source 
for the blower.
 
When the center level of the control panel is in CAR, the blower  plenum is 
fed 100% recirculating air from inside the car. When the center  lever of the 
control panel is in DEF, the blower plenum is fed 100% air  from the cowl 
source. The center level of the control panel can be placed  anywhere between CAR 
and DEF to mix inside and cowl air as the source for blower  plenum.
 
This addition to late cars ONLY selects the source for blower  plenum air. 
All other Heater/AC functions remain unchanged. You can have  forced outside air 
thru the AC vents by putting the control lever in DEF and  turning on the 
blower motor.
 
That's how my '74 is built, anyway.
