[DeTomaso] Pushbutton Lock failure Question

I had this situation on a '72 Pantera and it was not corrosion. On this car,
the door button would not go down correctly to lock, either. Instead, it was a
small part of the actual mechanism that was supposed to stay still while the
door was being locked. but in fact, there was some motion in the part that
prevented another part from over-centering and doing the actual 'locking'. The
thing had been improperly staked 35 years ago and wear had set in so the thing
shifted when the key rotated. It was hard to see even out of the car, but once
determined, it was pretty simple to drill a small hole clear thru everything
and insert a 4-40 screw with a nylock on it to supplement the staking. Thats
all it took but I spent 2 days trying to figure out why things weren't working.
Bottom line- assuming your key is the correct one for that lock, your
mechanism will very likely be different since pushbutton door stuff is derived from
the Mangusta and maybe from some FIAT. Nevertheless, I would remove the whole
mechanism before trying to figure out what's happening. Inspect everything very
carefully- there are several plastic parts that sometimes shrink and crack,
too. Good luck- J DeRyke
