[DeTomaso] Fuel Line Question

I'd agree with Larry that you need to be careful pulling a line off the
bottom of the tank. I know others have done this with no problems. But
I've personally pulled a significant amount of debris out from around the
tank mounting bracket after off-track excursions. And if a bottom fitting
gets cracked or removed, then gravity will drain your tank of gasoline for
you very quickly. While it's true that a shield covering the bottom fitting
would help, and it may be that you will be able to keep your car on the
pavement better than me - but it would still make me highly nervous.

An alternate solution is to have a second stainless pick-up pipe (1/2" or
3/8") inserted into your current sending unit. Ron Siple did mine and it
works great. The old pick-up line can then be used as a return line if
you're running a bypass regulator.

gravity fed gasoline fire)

Art,

That is a very good idea. What I do not like about it is that you are
pulling gas right off the bottom of the tank. That is where water and dirt
live. If you replaced the fitting with a longer one to extend into the tank
a bit it will not pull right off of the bottom.

If the plug is on the large side you may be able to weld / braze on an
extension tube with your tapped hole in the center of it.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Fuel Line Question

I'm getting ready to drill and tap my fuel tank drain plug for a 3/8
NPT fitting and fuel line to run to my fuel pump. I don't imagine there is
a readily available reducer to go from the tank threads to NPT? I thought
about using a 1/2 inch line from the tank to the pump, but it looks like
3/8 fuel filters are a lot easier to come by. I am using the RobbMc
mechanical fuel pump with 3/8 ports that is supposed to support 550 HP. Any
thoughts?

Thanks,
Art
