[DeTomaso] Is the Head dead yet

I use compcams pushrods, but I'm sure there are many good brands. I've used
Crane and no-name brands before. None have failed. Just make sure they're
hardened for use with guide plates.

Are they closed chamber heads? If they aren't and you haven't spent a lot
of money on them, you should consider looking for some CC heads.

Make sure the guide plates are adjusted properly, and nothing is binding or
rubbing that shouldn't rub. I had a set of guide plates that rubbed most of
the intake pushrods at the bottom of the U on the guide plates. I didn't
notice it, and ended up with 2 or 3 broken guide plates.

In my opinion (I are not an expert), the majority of the cases of bent
pushrods are due to oil starvation to hydraulic lifters. The lifters
partially collapse causing too much clearance. One or more pushrods drop
out of the cups on the rockers. Once the lifters pump back up, the springs
bind and the pushrods bend. That's one reason I like solid lifters - no
surprises.

Will.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Is the Head dead yet

Got a call back from the machine shop yesterday saying that my iron heads
are good to freshen up with a valve job, new harden seats, seals and some
porting. Question: I want to change to roller rockers and new push rods
suggestions on brands that will work for primarily street use. I have a mild
cam with no known data on type. Thanks, Mike Charleston,SC
