P.S.   This is an excellent photo showing how simple it would be to fabricate 
a sheetmetal shield to protect this area.   A few minutes spent with tin 
snips could produce a screw-on cover for this area which would completely shield 
the underside of the tank, pump, and filter, yet be easily removed for service 
access.
