I think it's overkill, but there's no empirical evidence either way.   If 
you're committed to this path, Precision Proformance makes exactly what you are 
looking for; it is basically just a small portion of their (miserable, 
intrusive) four-point cage, consisting of the roll bar hoop and cross structure.   
Bolts right in, fits perfectly, and should provide some degree of roll protection 
in addition to being a nuclear bomb-proof method of attaching the harnesses.

It is somewhat laughably referred to as a three-point roll bar, even though 
it only has two points???
