[DeTomaso] Cutting chrome tips

Performance-wise, the angle of the tips is less inportant than the closeness
of those tips to the tail light lenses, especially on cars with upswept
exhaust tips. Too close and/or too short and, due to the well-known swirl effect at
the rear, you could melt the plastic lenses if you drive fast. This happened
to a Pantera driven in one of the Silver State events where you're at full
throttle for many minutes at a time. And unless your carb is jetted way-rich so
black crud collects there, the cuts will rust since there will be no chrome at
the cuts, and chrome paint will not long survive the heat. I'd think a while
before I cut the tip lengths because they looked too long. If you must, shorten
the pipes by cutting a section out of the exhaust pipes leading into the
mufflers and re-welding, or try bending the tips down a bit with a long bar while
feeling for the metal beginning to crack or tear. Or sell the wrong-looking
pipes. My 2¢- J DeRyke
