A couple of things to try- but realize you're gonna HAVE To pony up some 
bucks to fix whatever's wrong- likely a valve job with good guide seals and a new 
timing chain, would help immensly. Or sell the thing pretty soon.

1)- mix up 10-15% ethanol or propanol in some premium gas to run the test on. 
This is simpler if your truck has dual tanks. 
2)- get the engine as hot as possible before pulling in, and tell them they 
have to check it ASAP 'cause- (do your own story). You may even want to 
cardboard-cover the radiator temporarily.

Expect the CO2 emissions to go to the moon on gasahol, but as far as I 
remember even in Algore-ifornia, that's not a test-failer yet. And there are still 
some Smog stations that will hook you up for "dagnostics" without the machine 
automatically finking to the DMV during the run. This will tell you if you've 
got a chance or not with the gasohol.
