[DeTomaso] FW: Rocker Stud angle question

Maybe you could check with someone who makes stud girdles. Seems like they would have to know the angles.

At lunch today I used some precision angle gauges to measure the rocker stud
angles.

Looking sideways at the head (looking towards the intake ports), the rocker
stud hole angles match their respective valve angles at a shade over 4
degrees for the intake and 3 degrees for the exhaust.

Looking lengthwise along the head (looking towards the accessory mounting
holes), the rocker stud hole angles DO NOT match their respective valve
angles. Both the intake and exhaust are at 9.5 degrees but I measure just
under 4 degrees for the intake rocker stud hole and around 1 degree for the
exhaust rocker stud hole.

What I was curious about is if Ford ever published any specs on the rocker
stud angles. I can do without these angles by lining up on the original
threaded 5/16" threaded holes but it would be nice to know what Ford thought
was the optimum angle. My goal is to machine the rocker stud bosses for
7/16" non-positive stop studs. My reasoning is that I have free access to a
milling machine and I like playing with this kind of stuff. The Manley
cutter was $70 and their 42277-16 stud set is only $50.

John,

That's what I thought until I stuck drill bits in the valve and rocker
holes and looked at the angles. They might be the same angle when looking
from the exhaust side of the head but looking lengthwise down the head
they're definitely NOT the same. Looking lengthwise down the head, it looks
as if the rocker holes are vertical with respect to the head bottom plane
while the valves are at a 9 degree angle.

Doug,

The rocker stud and valves are at the same angle.

I've seen the drawing in old SVO catalogs showing the angles that the
351C-4V valves make vs. the bottom plane of the head but has anyone ever
seen a drawing of the angles the rocker stud holes make vs. the plane of
the head.
