Been working on putting an EFI 331 (stroked 302) in my car for about a year. Had a few issues on the first go round, some mismatched components, terrible cam selection and some exhaust issues. I’ve got the mismatched EFI components figured out, had a custom cam ground and should have the new stainless headers back some time next month. Should have the engine back in the car next week and ready to run again some time next month, again once I get the headers back from Stainlessworks.

Honestly, I had a great Cleveland in the car but I really wanted EFI for starting and derivability reasons and didn’t want to go the 4.6 DOHC route. Thought it would be much cheaper and more productive and less timely to go with a 5.0 with all the Ford parts, aftermarket components, and 5.0 enthusiast than trying one of the few aftermarket fuel injections products available for the Pantera. The cheaper part and timeliness hasn’t really worked out but the knowledge and understanding I have gained about engines and EFI has been invaluable.

The wiring took a little time to figure out and the in-tank fuel pump, water hose routing and serpentine belt bracket took a few tries to get right as well as the headers but the engine bolts right up to the ZF and stock motor mounts.

All that said and done the new engine is 143 pounds lighter than the Cleveland it is replacing and puts out 396hp and 425ft of torque at 4300. My engine is a pretty mild build with mostly aftermarket Ford components. It is more common guys getting way more HP/TQ with excellent street manors with the right ECU tune with a Anderson, Tweeker or PMS ECU tuner. The stock 5.0 block is good to about 500 hp when built properly after which a race block like a Dart or one of the new Boss 302 blocks is necessary but way less expensive than a 351c race block if you can even find one and they are good to 1000 HP believe it or not and there are an unbelievable selection of aftermarket heads, cams, intakes, and engine management electronics.

I can send you a couple of in the works pics if you are interested.

Cheers

Paul
