Dear tvalz,

About 30 years ago I had my wheels stripped of paint. Then I sprayed the tire
side with a sealer that I got from J. C. Whitney that was for porous wheel
castings.

I then spent about eight hours on each wheel, sanding, filling and generally
tuning up the surfaces. I did not want them to look perfect, I still wanted
the sand cast look, the made by hand look.
Then I painted them.

I put some kind of elastomer in the paint that causes the paint to resist
chipping. After that I glued the valve stems in with silicone sealer.

A couple of days later I put air in the tires, about six months after that I
drove the car to a paint shop, where it lived for about three years. In the
meantime I bought a new house, was busy and not too anxious to get the car back.
It took about three months to get it runable when I did. The first thing I
did was go to my local gas station to check the tires.

Not one tire had lost a pound of air. I could not believe it.

So... If you are going to do it, do not set a timetable. Have fun doing it
and do every possible thing that you can, within reasonable expense, to do the
best job possible.

That will result in fewer problems down the road, don't worry, you will have
plenty of them anyway.
I guarantee it will be worth it.

All the best,
Dick Ruzzin
