[DeTomaso] 180 sound

This thread was originally on 180 headers which do not use a crossover pipe
by design; I suspect it would reduce any mid-range torque increases, which is
what these pipes are about. Regular headers can use a crossover but they tend
to be bulky since its not possible to get the pipes close together in front of
the mufflers where a crossover should be located. Running a properly-sized
pipe or X-pipes under the ZF introduces ground clearance issues and would be a
large source of heat to an area-
either routed on top or underneath the ZF, that doesn't need higher
temperatures!
If you're simply trying to tailor the sound from 180s, you can cut the
mufflers off and experiment with restrictors in the pipes going to bolt-on mufflers,
or try different mufflers than the usual straight-thru glasspaks. Honda
engineers once designed an exhaust system for their CBX 6-cylinder superbike that
reportedly sounded like a jet engine, and Honda bosses killed it as 'not
appropriate for a motorcycle'. So it is possible to 'tailor' the exhaust sound but
you're into a whole different kind of project here that may result in less
power at the end. Good luck and keep us posted- J Deryke
