I got one of each and tried the M12 first. As I screwed it in it was obviously too loose.
The 1/2"-20 felt right.

Threads in sump looked OK

Subject: [DeTomaso] is the stock oil drain plug M12-1.25 or 1/2-20?

My stock oil drain plug seems to have suffered some damage to the threads
closest to the hex.?
I figured a replacement would be a no-brainer, but at Autozone they said their
book showed an M14 plug for a Ford 351C, which was clearly too big and too
coarse.

Both the M12-1.25 and 1/2"-20 look very similar to my plug and to each other.

I assume since this was a good old Ford engine the 1/2" plug should be the
correct one, but I don't want to put in either one until I know which is
correct.

I plan to inspect the threads in the sump as best I can also, of course.

Thanks,

Jim
