Another option on the 80's cars was a 4.00.
I know one original owner of such a car, who paid big extra bucks for his
4.00 ring and pinion in his GT5-S. The top of his gearbox case is stamped
"4.00". Yet a few years later he drove side-by-side down the road with another
GT5-S, with a standard 4.22 ratio, and they turned EXACTLY the same RPM.
So, De Tomaso charged him about $3000 extra for the "4.00" stamp on the
gearbox, but never bothered to switch the ratios!!!!
He was famous for that sort of thing; Colin Bradshaw paid extra big bucks to
get a tricked-out motor, but when it finally blew up, he opened it up and
discovered that it was a bone-stock 351W truck engine; all the aftermarket goodies
and custom work he had paid for evidently got left behind in Modena
somewhere....
