PrecisionProPerformance is the company that worked on the car prior to
my ownership of it. My mechanic, who personally knows Bob, the owner,
spoke to him this morning to get an idea of what has been done to the
car through the years. Bob said that the previous owner did some of his
own work.

My mechanic has decided to pull the engine cover and have a "look see"
as to what the previous owner modified on the vehicle and get a general
idea of the quality of modifications performed by the previous owner.

Regards,

Kerry M. Maguire

Right now the interior is coming out so he can to get to the
distributor.

I'd take the car to a Pantera specialist such as Precision Pro-formance;
the distributor is accessed from above the engine. About all a mechanic
can reach from inside is the distributor retaining bolt and that can
also be reached from above. The 351C engine has some specific
peculiarities compared to a smallblock Chev and if your mechanic is paid
by the hour, your bill will be substantial until he finds them. Has he
checked the timing? The Cleveland has a tendency to partially (sometimes
completely) shear the distributor drive gear roll pin- on any
distributor including new ones- and if this happens, static timing
settings will shift around unpredictably. Plus, this is a 37-yr-old
performance engine; the harmonic balancer's outer ring often shears the
rubber separator on old units, moving the main timing mark to the retard
direction. So to set timing, you need to start with finding true TDC.
Cam chains also stretch rapidly in 351Cs due to the huge, heavy valves,
sometimes to the point of jumping a tooth or three. Debugging an engine
by long-distance is difficult at best- wish I could see the thing. Good
luck- J Deryke, in Nevada
