What I meant to say in my previous post is that my mechanic is back on
the job today.
He owns a 1974 L and a couple of 1960's era vintage Corvettes.
He has done a lot of work for San Diego Pantera Club members. He also
purchased 3 or so Panteras when they were sold BRAND NEW.
What baffles me as a novice owner is why the car will run perfectly for
5 miles, or so, and then crap out.

Those flashes are a sign of mis-timing. Check your distirbutor for
pin failure; check (haha not easy) timing chain for wear.
You should get specific instructions about this stuff, if not ask me
when I have sometime.
