I think you would have to try really hard to intall in incorrectly.
That being said mine is off by at least 1/4 tank and is a newly
tooled Wilkinson model. So does that mean go ahead and bend it down?

Clay, everyone seems to be focused on mechanical issues.....don't
discount electrical problems like corrosion issues at the gauge
connections. Cleaning the gauge (thank you SOBill) seems to have
fixed my gas gauge problems. I also had a very difficult time
sealing my unit to avoid having gas pour out when I filled the tank.
I went through about 10 solutions (slow learner here) before I landed
on Avation grade Permitex.....it's the ONLY thing that works. I hope
