Mike,
Just a few weeks ago I was talking with a vet at a nursing home. He told me
he was riding on a Sherman when it was hit by a shell. It blew him right off
the tank. He said he was lucky to be alive, if it was a better tank the
shell would have fragmented and killed him.

designed
to defeat it on the Russian front. Either one would blow any US tanks into
smithereens whereas the Sherman's 75mm gun was totally ineffective. Later
Shermans had a 76mm gun which was better--but not better enough.
Fortunately we had a whole bunch of airplanes. :>)

The Tiger I was a LOT more effective, and the Tiger II (King Tiger) was
unstoppable, except it was grossly underpowered, overweight, and suffered
from
mechanical unreliability. You didn't defeat a King Tiger, so much as you
just
waited around for it to bog down or break down.
