But, is it really getting that hot?   Or is it an illusion?

Swap the sender, see what happens.

BTW if you have IR fuel injection and you have measurably different temps on 
one side of the engine, I would suspect some queertrons have got loose in your 
system which are causing one bank to go way lean.   Could also be a fuel 
delivery problem, with a duff fuel pump failing to properly pressurize the system? 
  Are the cylinders that are going hot at the 'end of the trail' as far as 
fuel delivery is concerned?   

Just shooting in the dark here....
