Roydon - it might make a difference, though I am not sure, that your car is
a very early (pre-1300) Push Button car with a -1 ZF.

No, there is definitely a proper orientation--one way works, the other way 
doesn't work by a bunch.   It's been awhile and I can't remember which way
is 
proper, but if you try to do it the wrong way, it will become apparent soon
enough!
