You answer is better served with greater precision to your question.  This 
measurement will depend on a few factors including brand of tire and width 
of wheel.

I ran a straight edge across a Michelin pilot tire and measured from the 
straight edge to the wheel's inner lip.  The lip had a substantial taper on 
my 11" Fiske wheel. When measured to the middle of the lip's taper, it was 
slightly less than 3/4 inch with ~32lbs in the tire.

You are wise to be careful, I always had Chuck Engles wisdom in the back of 
my head when performing this exercise - "You do not want to end up with a 
matching set of boat anchors!"
