Fascinating, Dick! You really ought to consider writing a book. I've always wondered what was running through the minds of Giugiaro and Gandini in that famous photo where they are standing behind "their" designs, Giugiaro behind the Maserati Ghibli and Gandini behind the Miura.

Joe, I had a long afternoon with Nuccio Bertone as Stile Bertone had a contract with GM Europe to act as an advanced design studio, I went there every month or more, depending on the project. I have a story about that too. Regarding Gandini's participation in the Muira design, Mt. Bertone said Gandini ascended to Chief designer at Bertone when Giugiaro left to start his own company. Mr. Bertone realized he was very young but took a chance and promoted him anyway. Giugiaro left some sketches for the Muira as it was his main responsibility before he left. Gandini took the project over and Mr. Bertone said that he expressed his unhappiness many times over the design as it progressed. The design was finished and was sent to the shop for a hard model to be built. They worked in plaster then exclusively so I assume it was a plaster model. Gandini went on a two week vacation, Mr. Bertone said that "Mr. Gandini was a very stubborn man". He changed the design. I did not ask him how much he changed or what the inspiration was for his changes as it would have been rude of me to do that since he did not offer the information during the conversation originally. Gandini has done some good things but also some that are not good. All the best, Dick Ruzzin,______________________DickruzzinDESIGN at aol.com 920 Whittier Rd.
