[DeTomaso] Attention - flaky carb bowls

Mike - What are the chances that this is not carb related at all, but
instead your distributor shear pin has partially sheared? Check your timing
if you aren't getting anywhere with the carb issue...

Asunto: [DeTomaso] Attention - flaky carb bowls

I just got my Holley Avenger back from having the bowls replaced at Blood
Enterprises in Auburn, WA. Excellent shop. I had them do a dyno tune on
the car about a month ago after the new-motor break-in, came in at 326.5
RWHP @ 5750 RPMs, 349.5 lb/ft @ 3750. I was thrilled.

The next day, we participated in the Pony Trails drive portion of the
Mustangs Northwest Mustang Round Up which was a 300 mile drive over
Snoqualmie Pass and north to Leavenworth, WA, our version of the Bavarian
Alps, and back. The car ran fantastic with the tune, new offset front
bushings and new Fluidyne rad and suckers.

On Sunday however, she ran not so good. It started as a hesitation at
throttle tip-in and between shifts as the revs would fall. When I was in
line at the show, it would not idle and barely made it to the show grounds.
At the end of the show, it would barely start and wouldn't run smoothly. We
had all sorts of ideas, but I ended up having it towed home. DOH!!

As a bit of history, when I had my new engine built last year, I had a new
bowl put on the back of the carb so I didn't have to run the fuel line
around the back of the carb. When I pulled the carb after the tow home and
took it back down to Blood, they pulled both bowls off, and the inside
surface of the new bowl I had put on last year was literally bubbling and
flaking off in not too tiny pieces. I asked Craig Blood if he had seen this
before, and he replied that he had heard of it but this was his first
personal experience with it. I am running 92 octane, plus 104+ Max octane
boost, plus Bardahl Instead-Of-Lead. There was some Stabil (sp?) in there
over the winter as well, so it was a bit of a cocktail, but Craig said
nothing that should have done this.

I've not done any research on any of the blogs yet, but I'd be curious if
any of you have heard of or run a across this problem. I have pics if
anyone wants to see. If you've changed carb bowls recently and your car is
acting up, pull the bowl and take a look.

Thanks
Mike Thomas
