It's best done with two people.   But if you are forced to do it alone, what 
I do is put the gearbox (and shifter) in 3rd gear, and then put a tapered shim 
in between the shift lever and the finger of the gate.   I have found that if 
the shift lever is perfectly centered in the gate in 3rd gear when you 
tighten the "Connector, shift rod adjusting", after everything is torqued down, the 
lever has magically moved slightly to the left.   So, I use a shim on the left 
side of the lever to hold it in the right side of the opening in the gate.

Assuming you have properly adjusted it in the fore-aft plane ahead of time, 
this usually works out great.

Also, look for unwanted movement at the trunnion bearing where it attaches to 
the chassis.   This can consume some shift rod movement and lead to improper 
shifting.
