[DeTomaso] conflicting VINs

To Chuck and whom ever else may be of help:
 
I just got a phone call from a dealer in St. Louis who recently sold a car  
that came from Palm Springs CA.
 
The problem is that they are having trouble titling it because the VIN on  
the dash THPNLY01784 is not the same as the one on the door plate  THPNLS01784.  
Anyone have an explanation for this other than the car  was restored with a 
replica plate with the wrong letter on it.   However it was evidently 
registered with the builder plate number.
