I third the exhaust/headers leak.

I've heard -many- stories about backfires when letting up on the gas.  In
every case, it was resolved when a header leak was plugged up.

I've had great luck with the white Mr. Gasket gaskets - always retightening
them after the engine heat cycles a couple of times.

I second the exhaust/headers leak. Have your headers milled by a competent
machine shop and use a good quality copper or mulit layer aluminum gasket
from Percys
