What you're doing is pushing the last of any retained gasoline from the 
accelerator pump wells into the engine. This fuel evaporates a little slower than 
from the float bowls, it seems. If there's enough left when you kick it, it 
makes a sort-of combustible mix and the engine will often fire on it, pumping 
enough gas in the process to fill the float bowls etc before it runs out. More 
than 2-3 pumps of the accelerator pedal on a car thats been standing for more 
than a few days probably does nothing useful. FWIW- J DeRyke
