[DeTomaso] To stroke or not to stroke

That's true. It feels bad to blow an engine but it probably feels worse to go through life without pushing it.
Life is short, may as well enjoy it.
Speaking of which, I'll be crashing the VARA event at Willow Springs by running test laps there Friday with "The Beast".

p.s. I'll say this for you Dave and that is you definately know how to drive or race and spank your Pantera the way they were meant to be driven....and that is HARD.

we got guys with 400-1200 HP Pantera's who have NEVER raced or pushed the outside of the envelope for more then a few seconds. As Bob Benson said a while back

"if you drive hard enough and long enough you are going to break something eventually"

  Sometimes sooner then later ;-]>

A couple years ago I watched in horror as a new $25K engine AND the owner both grenaded on the engine dyno at Superior Performance.

Thank MD.I'm also getting tired of plowing $ into engines that only last a few thousand miles.
Of course I can always go with the higher cost of having a guy like Russ do the motor but then if something breaks it's even worse.
I have a line on a .30 2 bolt block that my pistons, crank etc will slide right into, with some 2bbl heads and new stainless valves, new cam & lifters, for about $2k from an old timer named Vern in Oregon.
Or I do the stroker with the top engine shop in SD for $5k plus heads.
On a different note, I''m going to Willow tomorrow to run some test laps in The Beast.

Valid concerns Dan. Talk to Dan Jones and Russ Fulps. We have Pantera's with Cleveland strokers running 406ci and higher although if I had to do it all over again (and you know we all will!) with a Cleveland I think I would not stroke it for the reasons you mentioned. Dawg looking ahead to a Dart block.

    Guys,

I'm looking at options for The Winged Warrior's 5th 351c. For another grand or so I can get an Eagle stroker kit with I beam rods and such. This would take the Cleveland out to 393 cubes or so.
I don't know if it's good for the intended application, a good street / road car, low rpm torque and power.
Also, given the problems I've had with the valves and pistons making unauthorized contact, I don't think I want the pistons lifting any higher.
    What do y'all think?
