More to the point, you should be able to easily see a big drain if you turn 
on a bunch of electrical stuff (radiator fans, interior fan, A/C fan, 
headlights) with the engine shut off.

If the needle ain't moving at all, something is obviously wrong, either with 
the gauge itself (they have been known to die internally) or with the wiring 
leading to/from it.

SOBill will of course have the correct and profound answer to this question.
