[DeTomaso] 351c oil filter

I've always trusted NAPA as being well above Auotzone and Schucks in quality
and I think it speaks well of Wix that they make NAPA Gold filters. I also
like the Purolator Premium Plus and Purolator PureOne. So for my 02
Explorer, my son's blown 96 Mustang GT and my 98 Mustang Cobra I buy any of
these four brands depending upon who has the best deal at the time. I also
use a Filter-Mag (strong neodymium magnet band) on the outside of the filter
to trap steel and iron particles. Although it messes up the compass in the
Explorer.

It looks like this one at Summit but this may not be the correct size.

Although I'm sure the AC Delco has a good filter, I just can't bring myself
to use a brand so closely affiliated with that 4 letter word car company
(CHEV).

On my Pantera, I run a System One which is a cleanable stainless steel mesh
cartridge type filter in a thick cast aluminum case. My engine builder
wouldn't warrant the bottom end of my engine unless I used it and it's what
he uses on his NASCAR engines. You can easily see the debris at each oil
change because you have to clean it. Its drain back valve consists of a
large stainless steel ball and spring. I would only recommend this filter
for a serious engine though due to its high one-time price. And it is quite
a bit larger than a standard filter.

What I had heard is that it was FRAM's regular line of filters that has had
quality problems (i.e. the PH8A), not the high performance ones (i.e HP-1)
but I don't remember where. Handle an HP-1's case and you'll see there's no
way to burst the metal; it's too thick compared to other good quality
filters like the Motorcraft, Wix and Purolator that don't have a reputation
for bursting. The minimopar site
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html doesn't like FRAM's
standard line but they didn't test the HP-1. The only other thing I
remember hearing about the HP-1 (from a trusted independent autoparts store
guy back in the early 80's) is that while it is physically larger than the
PH8A, is has a coarser filter media for less flow restriction and therefore
less chance of the bypass being activated by a high pressure/volume oil
pump. This comes at the price of some smaller particles getting through but
my bet is that it filters down to at least 5 microns and it is the above 5
micron particles that cause the majority of the wear. Keep in mind the HP-1
is recommended for high performance engines and not street engines. My bet
is that the HP-1 is a reliable filter for some of our more radical Pantera
engines but if anyone has any concrete info against it, I'd love to see it.

Same here.....I've used many of the HP-1's without problems.

Nope. Made in the U.S. of A.

I have had about half a dozen of the HP-1s without problem. Of course,
it only takes one blowout at speed to muck up your day.
