What I had heard is that it was FRAM's regular line of filters that has had
quality problems (i.e. the PH8A), not the high performance ones (i.e HP-1)
but I don't remember where. Handle an HP-1's case and you'll see there's no
way to burst the metal; it's too thick compared to other good quality
filters like the Motorcraft, Wix and Purolator that don't have a reputation
for bursting. The minimopar site
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html doesn't like FRAM's
standard line but they didn't test the HP-1. The only other thing I
remember hearing about the HP-1 (from a trusted independent autoparts store
guy back in the early 80's) is that while it is physically larger than the
PH8A, is has a coarser filter media for less flow restriction and therefore
less chance of the bypass being activated by a high pressure/volume oil
pump. This comes at the price of some smaller particles getting through but
my bet is that it filters down to at least 5 microns and it is the above 5
micron particles that cause the majority of the wear. Keep in mind the HP-1
is recommended for high performance engines and not street engines. My bet
is that the HP-1 is a reliable filter for some of our more radical Pantera
engines but if anyone has any concrete info against it, I'd love to see it.

Same here.....I've used many of the HP-1's without problems.

Nope. Made in the U.S. of A.
I have had about half a dozen of the HP-1s without problem. Of course,
it only takes one blowout at speed to muck up your day.
