[DeTomaso] Bigger-Better-Heavy Duty Shocks for Silver StateWOOPS - No Slacker Content

Thanks Dave.... I'll run questions and valid concerns by spring mfg (Eihbach) as well as shock (Bilstein and Aldan)... I've stressed the chassis enough on the dips (aka; woops) in the past to get airborne, bend quarter panels and crack rear windows so I hear ya bro'.

Bobby Byers (Precision Pro-Formance) who drove SilverState at 200+ in the old Hall Pantera already recommended 'minimal' changes for next year.....A spring rate increase from 750 to 800 pounds and a short shaft mounted poly stop. My challenge is limited to 2-3 miles of a total 90 mile course....I know increasing rear spring rate from 750 to 800 pounds will impact handling and ride. Willow Springs has a couple good elevation changes on the 2.5 mile course where we can test how spring changes will impact handling .There is also a section of "real" road and dips near my house where I can road test any spring and shock changes this winter before I return to Silver State at legal speeds...you know those places everyone else slows down for in their 4x4 pickups. ;-]>

Just a word of caution on progressive rate springs - you may not like the
handling. And you may not know you don't like the handling until you really
stress the chassis and suspension.

If one end of the car or one side of the car is loaded more than the other,
which is always the case when accelerating, braking or cornering, then
overall handling characteristics could become increasingly unpredictable.
It would be similar to having springs that are too soft and then hitting the
bump stops on compression in the middle of a corner. The suspension will
very suddenly go from a linear, predictable spring rate to a much stiffer
one - at which point the car will typically try to twitch off in a different
direction than where you thought you had it pointed (don't ask how I know
this).

Do you really want to experiment with variable spring rates at 145 mph?

Exactly Mike....thanks.
Already working on it...Spoke to Eibach Spring folks as well as Bobby
Byers at Precision Pro-Formance.

MD,

Have you considered getting a progressive-rate spring instead of a
straight-rate spring? That way it is compliant for the first few inches of
travel, but
then becomes much stiffer as the spring is compressed.

Mike
