[DeTomaso] MANGUSTA GEARSHIFT CHATTER / Dick Ruzzin

I have gear shift linkage chatter in first gear. 
It diminishes or disappears if I move the gear lever forward slightly.

I am about to get into it and wondered if anyone else has dealt with this 
before I start.
The joints are slightly worn. 
I assume it is the shaft near the first u-joint, contacting something, based 
on what I hear.

It does not happen in other gears.

Any ideas as to what I might look for?
