Good point, and removing the 2 cross bolts does not require the Ball Joint
Tool.
But the Ball Joint Tool will not harm the ball joint. Risk to the boot is
from using a “ball joint fork”
Or pickle fork...
Which is definitely NOT the way to go!

Well, for starters, it's much easier to just remove the two bolts which
secure the upper ball joint to the upper A-arm and remove it that way,
rather than risk damage by splitting it apart from the spindle. Changing
the shocks and springs will require a wheel alignment anyway, so you aren't
'saving' anything by popping the ball joint out of the spindle versus the
A-arm...
