Well, for starters, it's much easier to just remove the two bolts which 
secure the upper ball joint to the upper A-arm and remove it that way, rather than 
risk damage by splitting it apart from the spindle.   Changing the shocks and 
springs will require a wheel alignment anyway, so you aren't 'saving' anything 
by popping the ball joint out of the spindle versus the A-arm...
