[DeTomaso] Carb questions

Mark,

1. I use flat washers and locking washers on top of them. As you know a bit
tight is good, to tight is never good, and well loose will never work, on
carbs too.

2. I use the blue painters tape to seal things up. It seals well and comes
off clean.

Things falling down an engine....reminds me of a story. I am 10 years old
helping by Dad put a motor into a dump truck at his service station. He
hands me a bolt and tells me to find a washer. I go to his work bench and
dig in a can for a washer. He uses the washer on the bolt for the lift
chain. When he lifts the motor up a loud snap is heard. (I learn a lot of
new words) The washer shattered and he cannot find a hunk. (more new words).
He looks at me and asks "why did you hand me a harden washer?" (a what?) He
starts the motor a bit later. It runs less then 3 min before it eats its
self up. (I learned more new words now used in sentences). This was a big
day for a 10 year old. Harden steel, new words, and then everything put into
sentences...

Subject: [DeTomaso] Carb questions

I pull my carb off for the first time and got a good look at it. It's a
Holley 750 DP racing carb that should have been rebuilt long ago.

Naturally, some engine novice questions --

* I found that the four bolts holding the carb to the manifold were not much
more than finger tight and had flat washers. I will track down the proper
torque specs before putting it back on. Should I add lock washers?
Blue/red threadlock goop?

* Anytime I take my air cleaner off, I put a shower cap on the top of the
carb. Otherwise, due to Murph's Law, any bolt dropped anywhere in the shop
would fall into the carb, through the manifold, past an open valve and into
a cylinder. What is a good way to protect the engine when I scrape off the
old gasket between the carb and the manifold? I was thinking about just
stuffing a rag into the manifold then shop-vacing out the bit afterwards,
but it seem that there should be a better solution than that.
