Ed,

As a kid building mini bikes with lawn mower engines we had a kid in the
neighborhood that would just put his finger on the wire and tell you it had
spark or not. It never shocked him like it did the rest of us.

I'll bet that "got your motor running"!

I did that with a lawnmower once and I can just imagine what that was like.

Thanks,
Ed

You guys know way more than me about engines, so I will humbly submit my own
engine starting folly.

The starter was cranking nicely, but the engine would not catch. To check
for spark, I pulled a wire, pushed a screwdriver into the connector then
held the shaft of the screwdriver about a quarter inch from the block. I
asked my helper to crank the ignition. She did not do it, so I leaned
around the back of the car for her to hear me better. In doing so, I
touched my knuckle to the block and finger to the screwdriver shaft. She
had heard me the first time but was just a little slow. At that instant,
she cranked it.

Thanks Mark,
I was trying to keep the message short. I didn't think all the embarassing
details needed to be published again!

For some reason, Jim still likes us too.

Paul,
Don't give up! There is enough expertise on this list to help you
 through
this.

It's a good chance it will be something simple. I had the same level
 of
frustration with my
fresh rebuild a couple of years ago. It would start but it would run
 like
crap and backfire
like crazy when I tried to rev it. I gave up and threw in the towel
 after
two weeks.
My new friends at PCNC jumped on it at the pre Vegas tech session and
diagnosed the
problem: I had installed the spark plug wires in the distributor for a
 460
firing order!
I followed the picture in the book but I didn't read the text. The guys
 also
found 2 or 3
things I screwed up while trying to figure out the first problem.

Have a beer or martini (it's 5 o'clock somewhere), chill. It will run.
 And
when it's sorted
out you will love it.
