I have been playing around with a DC motor controller that might work...

I primarily am playing with this to control the speed of the interior (A/C)
fans.



This might work for your application.  It uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)
and supposedly will control up to 20 Amps.



The kit is cheap, but the assembled version is only $18.00 more.
