I'm hearing a lot of thoughts about bigger and badder Pantera engines,
but everyone forgets about the good old 429/460 big blocks. I converted
my 73 from a Cleveland to an 8.7 Liter (533 c.i. stroker). You can
stroke a 429, get 521, use a 514 or 460 crate motor. There is a little
fab work, none of which is permanent to the car(so it can always be
returned to a Cleveland). I've read some of the articles on the 4.6
conversions and I got to say that looks way worse than what I had to do.
Although it would be nice to be injected, I figure that can always come
along later. With aluminum heads my car weighs only about 100 lbs. more
than the Cleveland. I'm buffing out the paint job now and then I'll be
doing all the engine bay detailing over the winter. : )

I had both a 2000 and 2003 Excursion with the V10, great for towing a
10,000 lb trailer and it would criuse at 90 on the highway all day
long, but I never thought of it as anything special to be modified,
aside from a lack of performance parts ( K& N, Chip, Exhaust ) there
ain't much out there and it's not an attractive powerplant to be seen
in a Pantera engine bay in my opinion. Plus my Pantera with a highly
modified engine gets better gas mileage everywhere than the Excusion
did on the highway.
I averaged 9-10 when towing, 12-14 in town and 15-16 on the highway
w/o a trailer.
But in the truck, it was great.

It's a 5.4L V8 with 2 extra cylinders so it is substantially longer as
well
as taller than a 4.6L. The October 1999 issue of Mustang and Fords
magazine
listed a 4.6L SOHC at 600 lbs. The 5.4L is taller and heavier and the
6.8L
heavier still. Also may be an evolutionary dead end as Ford is working
on
a replacement V8.

The 4.6 stroked to a 5.1 with a Kenne Bell supercharger may work very
well. Reliable, efficient and tame for putting around and quite capable
with right foot influence...just a guess.

This makes more sense, although if going heavier I would want BIGGER.
Maybe the rumor I heard was concerning the one-off (?) V10 based on a
4.6?

The developemental is a 7.0? I look forward to this, the mod motors
never impressed me much.

thanks Dan,

Can't you just imagine the sound, those babies probably hit 18,000 rpm
or
more!

Now that's an engine for an open road event!

Current exchange rate makes them cost $119,706.77 plus shipping!

Ouch

I think you will need to add in the price of a new tac too. I bet the
tac
would kill my car budget.

Actually, the WWII Ford Tank Motor is more what I had in mind. (V12?)

From what I remember: twin cam, 4 valve, all alluminum, 1000 cubic
inches.

Yep.

Hey Peter,

You don't have to be FUBAR to go that fast on a 2-lane road unless you
are also sharing that road with the public.

That is the beauty of the open road races. The road is 'closed' to
the public the day of the event and the police and the community and
dept of Transp. are all the real reason we can participate in this kind
of competition.

So whether you go to Nevada, Texas, Nebraska or Mexico to make the ORR
it is mor about a test of your engine and how you set the Pantera (or
Mangusta) up to run. Whether its cops or guys in all most new Lambo's,
Ferrari's, Porsche's and Vettes giving you high 5's at the finish line
its all good.

P.S. I've traded 1-finger salutes with other ORR drivers and police
and its hard to see the grins through shielded full face helmets but
you KNOW the grins are there ;-]

My best score in about a 20 minute session: 95,500. It's very difficult
to
score over 100,000, although a few years ago I did it. Hint: It's better
to
kill a hostage than let a Bin Laden escape (just be sure you hit the
terrorist hiding behind the hostage)! Don't worry about wasting
ammunition,
you have an unlimited amount. It's the missed terrorists that will spell
your defeat (game over when 10 terrorists escape (are missed)).

Hey Peter,

You don't have to be FUBAR to go that fast on a 2-lane road unless you
are
also sharing that road with the public.

That is the beauty of the open road races. The road is 'closed' to the
public the day of the event and the police and the community and dept of
Transp. are all the real reason we can participate in this kind of
competition.

Just the messenger -- I found this in the Tools For Sale section on
Craigslist. I have been looking for one for a while, but I can never
find
it when I need it.

I've been trying to find the cause of my non functional turn signals.
All the running and turn lights
flash when activated through the hazard switch, but no turn signal with
the hazards off and using the turn signal stalk. I figured that power
wasn't getting through the hazard switch...yellow wire to green with
flashers on and yellow to red with flashers off. I have the switch out
and thats what the tester shows. This is the 1st time I've ever had
trouble with a hazard switch. Dirty
or broken contact I guess. Can you get these apart? Cleaning ideas?
Replace it with what?
Any thoughts appreciated.

Very Groovy! The Hazard Switch is now working. Thanks Garth for the
link. It came apart
pretty easily...no puncture wounds. I just used steady bending pressure
with a little prying
after a got a gap between the parts. Mine was working fine
mechanically, but not electrically.
When I got it apart. one of the little ears on the center section looked
like it may have been bent during assembly and finally quit making
contact. The really painful part is still to come...getting the locking
ring back on. Thanks again.
Michael...flashing again.

Yeah, and a 300 pound crankshaft according to Leno! Bulldozer frames
don't
make for good handling. Good luck- Jd

Two weeks ago there was such a thread. On the back of the switch are
metal
tabs; bend them straight and the body comes apart. The innards are
spring-loaded
and a cam-groove is cut into the side of the body. A contactor rides in
the
slot and makes contact with various points as its pushed in. What
usually
happens is the plastic body swells as a result of 35 years of spring
pressure and
the contactor pops out of the groove. I shimmed mine back into its
groove;
others use a small hose clamp around the OD to squeeze the body back
into a
cylinder rather than a barrel shape. If you absolutely cannot fix it,
the switch
from an early '70s Alfa seems to be similar but with slightly different
wire
posts. Good luck- J Deryke
