That is *totally* excessive.   There should be barely any play at all.   Read 
the article that I wrote; it addresses that problem also.   The problem might 
be in the male/female slider, or the hub could be poorly machined and 
actually be slipping on the steering shaft!

I wouldn't drive a car that had as much free play as you have.   Something is 
definitely wrong, and it's dangerous.
